Follow in the footsteps of some of the Souths literary icons, from William Faulkner to Eudora Welty and John Grisham, and see their words come to life in the places they lived and frequented. From their homes and gravesites to museums, monuments and landmarks dedicated to them, Southern writers and the stories they tell are a big part of the regions culture.

Visit the New Orleans apartment where Tennessee Williams began writing A Streetcar Named Desire and the Key West Hotel where he finished the play. Pay homage to Flannery OConnor at her farm and gravesite in Georgia or make a pilgrimage to Harper Lees Maycomb in Monroeville, Ala. Head down to Florida and travel Zora Neale Hurstons Heritage Trail or see the house where Jack Kerouac was living when On the Road was published. Thats not to mention the multitude of sites related to Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway, along with living writers like Kathryn Stockett and Pat Conroy.

This app also includes tours and events, plus restaurants, bars and hotels with a literary theme, from the Mockingbird Cafe in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to the O. Henry Hotel in Greensboro, North Carolina. No literary app would be complete without the independent bookstores that help carry on the legacy of the Souths writers or festivals and conferences that celebrate them each year.

While individual states and organizations have created trails in certain sections of the South, no comprehensive trail of literary sites exists. With more than 130 sites to visit and over 700 photos, this app aims to provide lovers of Southern lit with a multitude of options for paying tribute to their favorite authors and hopefully discovering new ones along the way.

A native of South Louisiana, Erin Z. Bass founded online magazine www.deepsouthmag.com in 2010 as a way to connect the Southern states through stories on culture, food travel and literature. She realized the appeal the Souths literary heritage has for people of all ages and has visited many of the regions dedicated sites herself, including the home of Eudora Welty in Jackson, Miss., and hometown of Harper Lee and To Kill A Mockingbird in Monroeville, Ala. She shares a few insider tips for sites shes personally visited and enjoyed talking to literary experts and tourism representatives across the South while researching this app.
